Summary of Unit
Welcome to Health class! I am eager to teach you all. This unit will cover healthy choices. It covers nutrition and diet, physical activity, drugs, and alcohol. We will go over effective ways to avoid partaking risky behaviors. We will also cover why establishing healthy lifestyles is important for one's future. You will learn how their bodies are effected by exercise and what you consume. You will learn terminology such as metabolism, calories, and different types of drugs. Concepts such as controlling your food/not letting it control you, and avoiding peer pressure will be covered. Upon completing this unit, you will be able to describe and analyze balanced diets, create a diet/exercise plan, compare food labels, believe that you are strong enough to avoid peer pressure, and realize that choices you make will affect your futures.

C1 Healthy Practices and Behaviors
Grade 9-Diploma
Students demonstrate healthy practices and/or behaviors to maintain or improve the health of self and others in each of the following areas: healthy eating; physical activity; tobacco; alcohol, and other drug use prevention, and prevention of STDs, HIV and unintended pregnancy.
Students will understand that:
Their bodies are either negatively or positively effected by what they consume.
Getting adequate amounts of physical activity is vital to their health.
Drugs and alcohol have many negative effects on their bodies.
Essential Questions Considered:
How do different foods and substances effect our bodies and how should we decide what to eat?
How does exercise benefit our bodies and what happens if we do not get enough?
How do drugs and alcohol alter peoples' minds and how do they effect their bodies?
Students will know:
Terminology: metabolism, calorie, drugs, BMI, stimulant, depressant, hallucinogen, dependency, addiction. Key factual information: effective versus ineffective dieting, how metabolism and calories relate, types of drugs. Critical details: Control your food/don't let it control you, physical activity/balanced diet makes you feel better, drugs and alcohol should be avoided to maintain the quality of life, avoid peer pressure.
Students will be able to:
Describe the importance of a balanced diet and an adequate amount of physical activity.
Evaluate the effectiveness of various diets, and realize that fad-diets are ineffective.
Create an exercise plan for individuals based on BMI and desired results.
Compare food labels and select the healthiest choices.
Believe that they are strong enough to avoid peer pressure associated with drinking and drugs.
Realize that choices they make now will affect their health in the future.
Performance Task:
Be able to design an exercise plan
Be able to imagine being a personal trainer
Help motivate others to be physically active.
Expectations
Assignments are expected to be turned in on time, unless prior arrangement have been made in advance. If a student is absent, they must come see me as soon as they return to school. They will have one day to make up the assignment and get full credit. Assignments can be turned in late for partial credit. The most important part of this class is participation. Students are expected to arrive at class on time and be ready to learn. Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students must follow the MBHS Code of Academic Integrity.

Students will blog about various prompts related to balanced diet and physical activities. Magazine Article: 50
Students will write a magazine article about a certain fad-diet. Celebrity Fit Club Audition Tape: 50
Students will create an audition tape to show off their personal training skills and fitness knowledge. Public Service Announcement: 50
Students will create a PSA warning peers about drinking and/or drugs. Comic: 50
Students will create a comic in order to show successful ways to avoid peer pressure. Fit Day Activity: 50
Students will create a profile on fitday.com and use it to analyze food labels. Participation: 100
Participation is a vital part of health class. We will have many class discussions and work in groups frequently. Homework: 100
Homework must be complete and passed in on time. Test: 100
There will be a Healthy Choices unit test, which will cover everything we have covered during this unit.
